SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for “The Executioners,” the finale of “Cape Fear,” now streaming on Apple TV.

Houseboats in “Cape Fear” adaptations never seem to bring good fortune — a fact Juliette Lewis knows all too well.

In Martin Scorsese’s 1991 adaptation — a role that earned her an Oscar nomination at 18 — Lewis portrayed Danielle, a character who was manipulated, assaulted, and terrorized aboard her family’s houseboat by Max Cady (Robert De Niro). Cady, a serial rapist, used her as a pawn in his vendetta against her father (Nick Nolte), the attorney responsible for his incarceration. Danielle emerged from the traumatic experience with physical and emotional scars, having lost her innocence on the banks of the North Carolina river.

Lewis, however, recalls the experience fondly.

“It was so much fun, which might sound odd, but I was with Jessica Lange and De Niro, and they were doing push-ups between scenes,” Lewis shared with Variety. “We all did jumping jacks to get our heart rate up to portray that terror. That was where I learned the ropes, and those lessons have fueled my entire career.”

These experiences have been particularly significant as she joined Apple TV and creator Nick Antosca’s series adaptation of “Cape Fear” this summer. In this version, she takes on a completely new role: Crystal, the show’s menacing villain. Yet, in the opening scene of the finale, she once again finds herself on a houseboat — but this time, things don’t end well.

Initially introduced as a mysterious, hooded figure stalking Max (Javier Bardem), Crystal injects chaos into his otherwise calculated plan for revenge against Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson), the lawyers who prosecuted him. However, Anna discovers in the penultimate episode that Crystal is actually Max’s sister, who mistreated him in their youth. The two also supposedly shared a sexual relationship, which Anna suspects led to a child. This revelation emerged from a brief collaboration between Anna and Crystal.

“It was exciting to play two characters who seem to enjoy each other’s company, or do they?” Lewis says. “Both are out for something, and both know Crystal is hiding something. It was fun to engage in that dynamic with Amy, whom I greatly admire.”

Ultimately, Crystal can’t release Anna, as she has been colluding with Max all along. Her inability to manage her family issues becomes apparent when Anna informs Crystal’s son Luke (Max Mattern) that he might be Max’s son. This revelation sparks a heated argument, providing Anna a chance to escape into the river, although not before Crystal wounds her hand. When Max arrives at Crystal’s houseboat, he demonstrates her expendability. Despite her pleas that they are now even for their past wrongs, Max shoots her and Luke.

“In the scene with Javier, when our faces were so close, the director once suggested I look into the camera,” Lewis says. “But I felt the proximity was enough. I like maintaining certain cinematic conventions, and the way I looked at him felt really special.”

Lewis has had the rare opportunity to confront two Max Cadys, first with De Niro and now with Bardem. She recognizes the significance of these moments.

“They’re two icons of American cinema, and I definitely felt that,” she says. “Working with Javier, I was amazed by how fully he inhabits his roles. It’s a remarkable sight, especially on the boat.”

The houseboat scenes in the finale echo familiar territory for Lewis. In the film, De Niro’s character traps Lewis’ character in the boat and she eventually sets him on fire. In the series finale, after Max shoots Crystal and Luke, he locks them in the hold and sets the boat ablaze, leaving their father (Ron Perlman) to burn on the deck. Lewis notes the similarities and praises Antosca’s clever nods, although she is still processing her return to the houseboat scenario.

“I still do push-ups and jumping jacks before portraying a fearful scene because I watched Jessica and De Niro do that,” she says. “Filming the series felt nostalgic, being on the houseboat again in a different role. With the high stakes, Crystal had to be a formidable villain for Max Cady. Nick knew that bringing me back needed to be impactful.”

The unstable grip Crystal has on her sanity initially drew Lewis back to the “Cape Fear” universe, continuing a tradition set by Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, who had small roles in the 1991 adaptation. (The films and now the Apple series originate from John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel “The Executioners.”)

“I was eager to portray a fractured personality, which is what Nick crafted for me,” she says. “This character has been in and out of institutions, and that energy is what we’re bringing. She fluctuates between different states. You might call it personalities or energy, but she exists in extremes.”

Antosca provided Lewis with a three-page backstory for Crystal, only parts of which appeared on screen. This gives Lewis hope that Crystal might survive the inferno on the houseboat, a possibility not ruled out as no bodies are shown, and the Bowdens ultimately spare Max.

“And we were surrounded by water!” Lewis points out, hinting at potential escape routes.

Regardless of whether Crystal meets her end, Lewis believes one thing is certain: “She’ll haunt him until the end of time,” she concludes.
