On June 28, 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo triggered the start of World War I.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Maj. Gen. George G. Meade as the new commander of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War.

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in France in 1919, ending World War I.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Alien Registration Act in 1940, requiring foreign adults living in the U.S. to be registered and fingerprinted.
