Molly Wheeley has faced her fair share of challenges. From serious knee injuries to illness sidelining her during the World Cup, she has persevered through it all.

Playing at home in the transtasman series against Australia was a special moment for Wheeley. The Touch Blacks mixed team’s tournament in Christchurch saw her play a crucial role, alongside other Otago players like Charli Sinclair and Hamish Faulks. While the mixed team didn’t come out on top overall, winning the opening test was a significant achievement.

Wheeley cherished the experience of playing in front of her loved ones, especially on Anzac Day. Despite the team culture and memorable moments, what stood out the most for her was simply being able to play the game she loves after last year’s setbacks.

Coach Damian Burden’s leadership was instrumental in the team’s performance, with Wheeley praising his support and belief in the players. Burden, in turn, commended Wheeley’s resilience and dedication, highlighting her remarkable journey back to the field after multiple knee injuries.

As a teacher at Bayfield High School, Wheeley has not only excelled on the field but also off it, earning recognition for her achievements. The season has been a successful one for her, culminating in accolades like the Otago female player of the year and the open women’s leadership awards.

Overall, Wheeley’s story is one of determination and triumph in the face of adversity, showcasing her strength both as a player and a person.
