In a move that has stirred up a veritable hornet’s nest of controversy, Romanian officials have declared Nicusor Dan, the liberal mayor of Bucharest and a mathematician by trade, as the victor of the second and final round of the tumultuous presidential elections.
The first round of voting was scrapped amidst a series of dramatic events, including the arrest and disqualification of front-running candidate Calin Georgescu. This election, now marred by allegations of electoral fraud and claims of foreign meddling—specifically from France—will surely leave a blemish on Romania’s democratic process.
George Simion, a right-wing populist who had a commanding lead of over 20 percentage points in the initial round of voting, has issued a warning about widespread fraud. He took to social media platform X to proclaim himself the “new president of Romania,” despite the official results declaring Nicusor Dan as the president-elect.

Reuters reported:
“In a surprising last-minute surge, the soft-spoken Nicusor Dan has emerged as a contender after trailing for weeks behind George Simion, a hard-right supporter of Trump and a Eurosceptic advocating for an end to military aid to Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Simion has yet to concede.”
“The 55-year-old Dan campaigned on a platform aimed at combating rampant corruption, continuing support for Ukraine—where Romania has played a crucial logistical role—and reaffirming Romania’s position within the European mainstream.”

Across conservative social media channels, supporters of Simion are voicing their grievances, alleging massive irregularities. One tweet lamented, “It seems the EU has successfully orchestrated a grand electoral fraud, spearheaded by Macron’s France, Moldova, and, of course, the Romanian state. Perhaps we were too naïve to believe Romania would experience a genuinely free election; too much was at stake…”
Well, they did it. The EU managed to push through this massive electoral fraud, led by Macron’s France, Moldova, and, of course, the Romanian state:
