Kanye West’s Apology: A Mental Health Expert’s Perspective
In the aftermath of Kanye West issuing a public apology for his past antisemitic behavior, mental health experts have weighed in on the authenticity of his words and the impact of his actions. Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author of “Therapy Nation,” spoke exclusively to RadarOnline.com about West’s apology and its implications.
Alpert noted that West’s apology appears to be more deliberate and reflective than many other celebrity apologies. He commended West for acknowledging specific harm caused by his actions and recognizing the need for ongoing treatment. However, Alpert emphasized that sincerity will be judged over time, and the true test lies in whether West’s behavior remains stable in the future.
West’s behavior, according to Alpert, aligns with symptoms of bipolar disorder and manic episodes. Individuals with bipolar disorder can experience impulsivity, grandiosity, poor judgment, and even psychotic thinking during manic episodes, which can lead to self-destructive actions. While bipolar disorder can help explain certain behaviors, Alpert cautioned that it does not automatically excuse hateful beliefs or rhetoric.
Regarding West’s request for forgiveness from the Jewish community, Alpert emphasized that forgiveness is not something owed to him. Mental illness may provide context for behavior, but it does not erase the harm caused. Alpert stated that forgiveness, if granted, typically follows sustained accountability, consistent treatment, and a prolonged period without repeating the harmful behavior.
As for West’s prospects for long-term stability, Alpert highlighted that it is achievable for individuals with bipolar disorder but requires structure, medication adherence, sleep regulation, and strong boundaries. He acknowledged the challenges faced by someone like West, who is constantly in the public eye and surrounded by external stimuli.
In his apology, West revealed that a brain injury sustained in a car accident 25 years ago went undiagnosed until 2023, leading to mental health issues and a subsequent bipolar disorder diagnosis. He admitted to losing touch with reality during a manic episode, which culminated in antisemitic rhetoric and the creation of merchandise featuring swastikas.
West detailed a four-month-long manic episode characterized by psychotic, paranoid, and impulsive behavior in early 2025. He credited his wife, Bianca Censori, for encouraging him to seek help and shared that with a regimen of medication, therapy, exercise, and healthy living, he has found a new baseline and center.
As Kanye West strives for accountability, treatment, and meaningful change, mental health experts like Jonathan Alpert emphasize the importance of both compassion and accountability in his journey towards stability and healing.
