White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is making headlines once again, this time accusing California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s top law enforcement official of jeopardizing public safety by refusing to cooperate with ICE detainer requests. In a recent press release from the Department of Homeland Security, Leavitt highlighted numerous cases of individuals charged or convicted of heinous crimes such as sex offenses against children, violent assaults, and even murder.

The ongoing feud between the White House and California officials escalated when Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons penned a scathing letter to Attorney General Rob Bonta, pointing out that California’s sanctuary policies have resulted in the release of over 4,500 “criminal illegal aliens” since January 20th. Lyons condemned Newsom and other sanctuary politicians for putting American lives at risk by releasing dangerous criminals back into communities.

In response to these accusations, Governor Newsom took to social media to defend California’s stance on immigration enforcement. He criticized the Trump administration for attempting to divert attention from other issues, including a controversial image posted by President Trump on Truth Social. Newsom emphasized that California does collaborate with ICE to remove criminals from state prisons, particularly those convicted of heinous crimes like rape and murder.

Despite California’s efforts to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, tensions remain high as the Trump administration continues to ramp up immigration raids and arrests across the state. Federal officials have identified over 33,000 individuals in California custody with active detainer requests, citing a range of serious offenses including homicides, assaults, burglaries, robberies, drug offenses, weapons offenses, and sexual predatory crimes.

The clash between the White House and California officials underscores the ongoing debate surrounding immigration enforcement and public safety. As the war of words intensifies, both sides are adamant in their positions, with each presenting their own set of facts and statistics to support their arguments. The issue of sanctuary policies and ICE cooperation remains a contentious issue, with no easy resolution in sight.
