Former Democratic Representative Katie Porter, who is vying for the governorship of California, exhibited an unusual display of agitation during a pre-recorded interview with CBS Sacramento’s Julie Watts, a segment that captured attention and prompted plenty of buzz online.

Katie Porter, a smiling woman with curly hair dressed in a blue jacket, standing outdoors, appears with a soft background of trees and buildings. Porter is one among a myriad of candidates from various parties, including Democrats, Republicans, third-party members, and independents, participating in the upcoming California jungle primary set for June 2.

As part of the interview where all candidates faced similar inquiries, Porter reacted particularly strongly to a question regarding the necessity of securing votes from the 40% of Californians who supported President Donald Trump last year.

The initial part of the Porter interview, which aired prior to the more dramatic moments, showcased her amusing disbelief at the thought of needing Trump supporters for her campaign, hinting at a dismissive attitude that would later unravel:

With Katie Porter as our next governor in California, we might find ourselves nostalgic for the days of Gavin Newsom. She’s akin to him, but with less acumen.

As the interview progressed, Porter threatened to exit, indicating she wanted to avoid an “unhappy experience” being filmed. Reporter Julie Watts, meanwhile, sought to defuse the escalating tension, reassuring her that she too wished for a pleasant exchange.

This episode resembled a cinematic moment where a caregiver desperately tries to soothe a volatile individual, only for the latter to perhaps erupt, swinging a tray of dubious intentions.

Interestingly, a report from the New York Post in 2023 detailed troubling allegations from Porter’s ex-husband, who claimed she once hurled scalding hot mashed potatoes at him during a quarrel.

The former husband of Rep. Katie Porter alleged instances of verbal abuse and instances where she threw “toys, books and other objects” at him. He recounted that during one particular incident in 2006, Porter had an explosive reaction over his method of preparing mashed potatoes, leading her to unceremoniously empty the contents of a ceramic bowl onto his head, resulting in burns.

A recent Newsweek article highlighted that despite her turmoil, Katie Porter maintained a lead in early polls for the gubernatorial race:

Republican contenders looking to stir up competition in this typically Democratic state find themselves against a backdrop where voter indecision is significant. A recent poll from the University of California, Berkeley, and The Los Angeles Times revealed that while no candidate holds a definitive majority, Porter garners 17% of voter support, placing her ahead of Republican Chad Bianco at 10%.

Among others, former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, claimed 9%, while conservative commentator Steve Hilton came in at 6%. Other Democrats, ex-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and businessman Rick Caruso, who has yet to officially announce his candidacy, each secured 4%. Notably, a whopping 38% of those surveyed remained undecided.

In an Emerson College poll released September 19, Porter continued to display her frontrunner status:

In the 2026 gubernatorial primary race, former Rep. Katie Porter leads with 16% backing, trailed by Republican Steve Hilton at 10%, Sheriff Chad Bianco at 8%, and former Secretary Becerra at 5%. Meanwhile, a plurality of voters—38%—remain undecided, indicating a somewhat turbulent landscape for all candidates.

Interestingly, the fallout from Porter’s interview surfaced just a day after she received an endorsement from the pro-choice political action committee Emily’s List:

I’m grateful for @emilyslist‘s support in this campaign. Now, more than ever, we crave leaders willing to cut through the nonsense for families.

There’s little Donald Trump dislikes more than a strong, assertive woman standing her ground. https://t.co/xdYtzCt7JI

In the aftermath of the interview’s wildly circulated excerpts, the KOVR report’s coverage notes that despite the initial chaos, Porter ultimately did continue and finish her interview:

Porter, who represents a swing district in Orange County, was notably the only candidate to evade a direct answer regarding the necessity of securing Republican votes to clinch victory. She queried, “How would I need them to win? If it comes down to me versus a Republican, I believe I will capture support from those who did not vote for Trump.”

Yet, as several of her rivals underlined, California’s top-two primary system means that Republican voters could indeed play a crucial role in boosting a Democratic candidate.

Porter’s frustration with follow-up inquiries did raise her ire, culminating in her expressed desire to discontinue the interview. Ultimately, she remained to respond to additional questions.

UPDATE: Julie Watts shared a version featuring dual camera angles in response to the interview’s viral status:

Following this 3-minute excerpt from a larger 30-minute segment going viral, we’ve decided to upload it ourselves. However, I encourage watching the entire interview. https://t.co/wHQcHbybqF @CBSNews @kcalnews @CBSSacramento @KPIXtv pic.twitter.com/A80fBGiFxE
