Typically, teahouses and raves don’t share the same spotlight, but Katseye changed that by bringing an electrifying hyper-pop dance experience to a vibrantly decorated tearoom during their performance of “Pinky Up” at the American Music Awards.
Their dynamic performance took place just before they were awarded best new artist on the CBS/Paramount+ broadcast.
Given the strong following of Katseye’s fan base, their performance was among the most eagerly awaited of the night. “Pinky Up,” which aired about two-thirds into the three-hour show, was notable for its impressive production elements.
The performance began with extras pretending to sip tea and enjoy pastries, raising their pinky fingers in jest of the etiquette commonly linked with tea drinking. The scene then erupted into a spectacle of EDM beats and bright pink visuals. The five band members emerged from a giant pink teddy bear, and their costumes adorned with small bear faces resembled a whimsical nod to the Grateful Dead’s mascot.
Upon receiving the new artist of the year award, the group delivered their speech primarily in English, with a few words in other languages reflecting their diverse backgrounds. Lara Raj expressed their gratitude, stating, “We’ve always been on a mission to celebrate diversity and represent our people and our culture, so thank you so much for giving us the platform to do so.”
EJAE and Rei Ami, known for “KPop Demon Hunters,” introduced Katseye’s lively performance. EJAE said, “Tonight already feels golden, and it’s about to get even better.” The bond between the “Demon Hunters” singers and Katseye was already strong, having collaborated at Katseye’s Coachella performance in April on the song “Golden.” Rei Ami described that partnership as “a beautiful meeting of girl power.”
“Pinky Up” is set to be featured on Katseye’s upcoming third EP, “Wild,” releasing on Aug. 14. Fans have already enjoyed the track, which was initially released as a digital single in early April and debuted live during consecutive weekends at Coachella the same month.
Katseye entered the night with three nominations, including new artist of the year, breakthrough pop artist, and best music video for “Gnarly.”
The AMAs marked Katseye’s first awards show performance since the Grammys, which was their final major appearance as a six-member group. Following that event, it was announced that Manon Bannerman would be taking a break from the group, and she was not present during the AMAs performance.
