Ken Martin, in DNC bid, calls for ‘massive narrative and branding project’ for Democrats

Ken Martin, the current head of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and a candidate for the Democratic National Committee chair, is proposing a major rebranding effort to improve the party’s image, which he believes has been tarnished in recent years.

In a detailed 10-point memo released on Tuesday, Martin outlined his vision for transforming the DNC and restoring confidence in the Democratic Party. The memo, shared exclusively with POLITICO, highlights key areas where Martin believes the party needs to focus its efforts in order to regain public trust.

The upcoming DNC chair election, set to take place in February, will be a pivotal moment for Democrats following their disappointing performance in the 2024 elections. Martin faces competition from three other declared candidates, including Ben Wikler, the chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, and New York state Sen. James Skoufis. Additionally, several other potential candidates are considering entering the race, including U.S. ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, former Rep. Max Rose, and Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha.

Despite the crowded field, Martin has emerged as a frontrunner in the race, securing endorsements from over 100 DNC members. His campaign has emphasized the need for a fresh approach to leadership within the party, with a focus on grassroots organizing, youth engagement, and a renewed commitment to building a strong presence in every state.

In his memo, titled “A New DNC Framework,” Martin outlines key priorities for the party, such as investing in year-round organizing efforts, reevaluating spending practices, and implementing a more transparent and effective primary process. He also calls for a reevaluation of the party’s messaging and branding strategy, acknowledging the perception among many Americans that the Democratic Party primarily represents the interests of the wealthy and elite.

To address this concern, Martin proposes making state party chairs and executive directors full-time paid positions, as well as creating a standardized digital platform to streamline the ad-buying process. He also emphasizes the importance of expanding outreach to diverse media platforms and engaging with local influencers to amplify the party’s message.

As the DNC election approaches, Martin and his fellow candidates will have the opportunity to present their visions for the future of the party in a series of candidate forums leading up to the vote on Feb. 1. The outcome of the election will not only shape the direction of the Democratic Party but also determine its ability to connect with voters and build a winning strategy for future elections.
