A recent incident on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina has left a young man, Kenyon Dobie, critically injured after he was stabbed by a homeless illegal migrant. Dobie, a good Samaritan, was trying to protect people on the train when he was attacked by Honduran national Oscar Solarzano, 33. Dobie is currently in critical condition with a tube pumping blood from his lungs.
According to prosecutors, Solarzano was drinking and yelling at riders on the train when Dobie stood up to tell him to stop. In response, Solarzano stabbed Dobie in the chest. Solarzano had previously been banned from the light rail system and has a history of multiple arrests, a robbery conviction, and two deportations.
After the attack, Solarzano fled the train but was apprehended by police. He allegedly admitted to the attack while appearing intoxicated. Solarzano now faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, breaking and entering, carrying a concealed weapon, and being intoxicated and disruptive. He is currently being held without bond.
This incident comes just four months after the tragic killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on another Charlotte light rail train. Zarutska, 23, was stabbed multiple times by a homeless career criminal, Decarlos Brown Jr., who was charged with first-degree murder. The chilling surveillance footage captured the moment when Brown calmly walked off the train after fatally slashing Zarutska.
The Charlotte community is reeling from these senseless acts of violence on public transportation. The safety and security of passengers on the light rail system have come into question, especially with repeat offenders like Solarzano and Brown being able to commit such heinous crimes. Authorities are working to ensure that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
