There is a palpable shift happening at Kenzo, with creative director Nigo at the helm since 2021. In a recent quote attributed to him, Nigo expresses a desire to return to the essence of Kenzo Takada’s legacy. He mentions that Kenzo’s foundation is built on elements such as color, freedom, and joy, and that the Fall 2026 collection is a personal tribute to the founder, focusing on the theme of homecomings and homage.

The presentation of this collection took place in the stunning Bastille house that Kenzo Takada built and resided in from 1993 to 2009. This modernist masterpiece, spanning around 10,000 square feet, features a koi pond and is mostly concealed within the surrounding Parisian housing. The house holds a rich history of being a hub for lively parties during Takada’s time.

In terms of the collection itself, there seems to be a departure from the more youthful direction that design director Joshua Bullen had been pursuing under Nigo’s guidance. Instead, the Fall 2026 pieces reflect a more classic and luxurious interpretation of Kenzo Takada’s design legacy. The floral-embroidered full skirts and Japanese tailoring motifs pay homage to the founder’s aesthetic, while also incorporating modern elements for the contemporary professional.

The collection also features nods to Americana with varsity jackets and sweaters, albeit in a more subtle manner compared to previous seasons. New brand language elements, such as a six-pointed cross and a double-K monogram, hint at the future codification of Kenzo’s identity across various product categories. The introduction of items like the kite bag and bicolor suits further evoke the brand’s heritage.

Looking ahead, Nigo and the Kenzo team appear to be embarking on a fresh chapter, possibly signaling a more significant revamp in the near future. The absence of a traditional fashion show and the talk of a restart suggest that there may be more assertive moves to come, possibly including the expansion of the brand’s monogram. It raises the question of whether Kenzo would be better suited on the womenswear schedule, aligning more closely with the founder’s vision and the brand’s essence.

Overall, the Fall 2026 collection and the changes at Kenzo signal an exciting evolution for the brand, blending elements of tradition with contemporary sensibilities under Nigo’s creative direction. It will be fascinating to see how the brand continues to evolve and redefine itself in the seasons to come.
