Khabib Nurmagomedov’s recent proposal to eliminate rounds in UFC fights has sparked a debate within the MMA community. The former lightweight champion believes that continuous fighting with no breaks could benefit fighters like himself who excel in pressure and positional dominance.

The idea is to have fights run as uninterrupted bouts, with no reset breaks in between. This format could lead to higher-paced and more chaotic battles where stamina and control play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

However, not everyone is on board with Nurmagomedov’s suggestion. Former UFC referee John McCarthy pointed out that this format has already been tested and may not be feasible. He highlighted that rounds give fighters a necessary rest to come back with more energy and fight hard again. Rounds also help judges in determining who won each portion of the fight.

Former UFC fighter Josh Thomson seemed to support Nurmagomedov’s idea on a recent episode of the WEIGHIN IN podcast. He proposed having one 10-minute round to decide the fight, with no breaks or stand-ups. However, McCarthy disagreed, citing examples of fighters who need time to build momentum in a fight.

The divide in opinions was further highlighted by former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, who humorously disagreed with Nurmagomedov’s proposal. O’Malley, known for his striking skills, joked that he would prefer more breaks in a fight, especially when taken down by an opponent.

Overall, Nurmagomedov’s suggestion has sparked an interesting conversation within the MMA community about the structure of UFC fights. While some believe that eliminating rounds could lead to more exciting and fast-paced fights, others argue that rounds serve a crucial purpose in pacing and judging.

It remains to be seen if Nurmagomedov’s proposal gains traction within the UFC or if the traditional round format will continue to be the norm in MMA competitions. The debate on this topic is likely to continue as fighters and fans weigh in on the potential impact of such a rule change.

The MMA community eagerly awaits further developments on this topic as fighters and officials continue to discuss the future of UFC fights and the potential implications of altering the current format.
