The Caribbean Conflict?

The United States is amplifying its military posture in a bid to combat drug cartels throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

President Donald J. Trump has reoriented National Security priorities, deploying military assets to affirm U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere, with a sharp focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.

In a striking assertion reported in an internal memo, the Trump administration has designated drug cartels as ‘unlawful combatants,’ thus framing U.S. engagement with them as an ‘armed conflict.’

This escalatory maneuver follows a significant naval gathering off the coast of Venezuela and recent U.S. military strikes targeting alleged drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean Sea.

According to the Associated Press:

“The memo embodies an extraordinary claim of presidential war powers, suggesting that drug trafficking aimed at the U.S. constitutes an armed conflict justifying military force — a novel rationale for both historical and future military actions.”

“The President has determined that a non-international armed conflict exists with these designated terrorist organizations,” the document asserts. Trump has subsequently instructed the Pentagon to “conduct operations against them in line with the law of armed conflict.”

“We have reached a crucial juncture where military force is necessary for self-defense and the protection of others against attacks from these recognized terrorist organizations,” the memo continues.”

“Last month, the U.S. military executed three targeted strikes against vessels in the Caribbean accused of transporting drugs. Notably, at least two of these operations involved boats originating from Venezuela.”

“These strikes were the culmination of a significant buildup of U.S. maritime forces in the Caribbean, a display not witnessed in recent memory. The Navy has stationed eight warships and over 5,000 sailors and Marines in the region, maintaining a consistent presence observed by defense sources.”

IBBOTSON: Affirmative. Pentagon officials have communicated to Congress, “We are now at war with non-state actors—be it Tren de Aragua in Venezuela or the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. We are prepared to engage in kinetic action against these groups…” pic.twitter.com/DFpSXl6fRB
