Lanvin: A Journey Through Time and Style
Lanvin holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating French couture house, with a rich history that is reflected in its abundant archives of designs and stories. When Peter Copping took the helm just over a year ago, he delved deep into these archives, drawing inspiration from the past while infusing his own modern touch. His recent shows have been a captivating blend of classic silhouettes and contemporary designs, and it seems that he is now ready to integrate the stories behind the brand into his collections.
One such story takes us back to the enchanting city of Venice, where Jeanne Lanvin once traveled with her niece, Marianne. The black and white photos of their journey, against the backdrop of iconic Venetian landmarks, were a poignant reminder of the brand’s rich heritage. Jeanne Lanvin’s love for fabrics and her visits to glass workshops in Venice inspired Copping to explore new creative possibilities in his designs.
The collection showcased a mix of evening looks with a modern twist, featuring heat-set stones and velvet ribbons for a fresh take on embellishments. The focus, however, was on building out the daywear, with Copping aiming to create a full wardrobe for the modern woman. From double-flared silhouettes to ornamented capelets and tweed ensembles, each piece was a nod to Lanvin’s timeless elegance.
Copping drew inspiration from the streets of Paris, observing how Parisian women dress, and incorporating elements of everyday style into his designs. The use of Murano glass as a graphic motif and Fortuny jewel tones added a touch of luxury to the collection, while the jewelry, inspired by Murano glass and crafted by a French artisan, added a unique flair.
The collection also featured statement pieces such as high funnel-neck jackets and sculptural heels, alongside more wearable items like colorful sweaters and re-edited Lanvin ballerina flats.
