Larry David recently shared some exciting details about his upcoming HBO comedy series at a talk during SXSW. The sketch show, titled “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America,” is set to premiere on June 26. The series will satirize the United States in celebration of its 250th anniversary.
Directed by Jeff Schaffer, known for his work on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Seinfeld,” the series consists of seven episodes, each containing about four sketches. The cast will feature familiar faces from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” such as Jeff Garlin, J.B. Smoove, and Susie Essman, who will portray Susan B. Anthony.
Guest stars for the series include Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn as Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes as the Wright brothers, and even Barack Obama, who will make an appearance opposite Larry David in one sketch. The show will also feature a guest appearance by Vince Vaughn.
Similar to “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the show will not be traditionally scripted, with most of the dialogue being improvised. Schaffer described the show as “‘Curb’ in costume.” A preview clip shown at SXSW depicted a sketch where Larry reenacts the iconic “V-J Day in Times Square” moment, resulting in a classic “Curb” scenario.
While the series primarily focuses on American history, it will touch upon the current political climate. David humorously remarked that he could never retire because of his talent, while Schaffer joked about celebrating the nation during challenging times, comparing it to a birthday party for a friend in rehab.
The duo emphasized the importance of human interaction in sparking creative ideas, with David stating that leaving his house was essential for inspiration. With a blend of humor and satire, “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” promises to be a refreshing take on American history.
