In response to the controversy surrounding Odessa A’zion’s casting as Zoe Gutierrez in the A24 adaptation “Deep Cuts,” over 100 Latino creatives have united to sign an open letter to Hollywood. The letter calls for increased representation of Latino voices in the development and greenlighting of projects, as well as the inclusion of more Latino actors in auditions for non-stereotypical lead roles.

Prominent figures such as Eva Longoria, John Leguizamo, Xochitl Gomez, Danny Ramirez, Gina Rodriguez, Gloria Calderon Kellett, and Jessica Alba have all lent their support to the cause. A’zion herself made the decision to drop out of the movie, stating that she had not yet read the book and expressing solidarity with the Latino community by refusing to be a part of the project.

The open letter directly addresses Hollywood decision-makers, urging them to take accountability and make intentional efforts towards equity in casting and storytelling. It highlights the broader issue of the ongoing erasure of Latino communities from the narratives that shape culture and public perception. The letter emphasizes the importance of involving Latino creators, consultants, writers, and performers at every stage of a project to ensure authentic representation.

The signatories of the letter have put forth specific actions for Hollywood to consider, including auditioning and hiring more Latino actors for diverse roles, hiring Latino executives in greenlighting rooms, involving Latino voices in all stages of development, and creating pipelines for access and mentorship within the industry.

The letter concludes with a powerful message, stating that the world is watching and calling on Hollywood to take concrete steps towards inclusivity and representation. The list of signatories includes a wide range of talented individuals from the Latino community, all united in their commitment to advocating for change in the industry.

Overall, the open letter serves as a rallying cry for greater diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, urging decision-makers to prioritize authentic representation and to listen to the voices of underrepresented communities. It is a powerful call to action for a more equitable and inclusive entertainment industry.
