Laura Fernández Espeso, a key figure in the international expansion of Grup Mediapro over the past decade, has announced her departure from the company. Having served as the general manager since January 2025, Fernández Espeso played a crucial role in driving the company’s growth in the global market.
The decision for Fernández Espeso to leave Grup Mediapro is said to be amicable and is part of a broader managerial restructuring within the company. She first joined Mediapro-owned Globomedia in 2009 and later took on the role of director of international content at Grup Mediapro in 2015. During her tenure, she spearheaded the company’s expansion into the international TV high-end drama market, establishing Grup Mediapro as a major player in the global entertainment industry.
In 2019, Fernández Espeso was appointed as the corporate and TV director at The Mediapro Studio, the content business arm of Mediapro. A year later, she assumed the role of CEO, leading the studio to collaborate with top creative talents such as Ran Tellem from Israel and Daniel Burman from Argentina. The Mediapro Studio also ventured into joint ventures and acquisitions, including partnerships with Penelope Cruz’s Moonlyon, the acquisition of Cimarrón in Latin America, and support for Wild Sheep Content in Los Angeles.
Under Fernández Espeso’s leadership, The Mediapro Studio forged numerous international TV alliances with major broadcasters and studios, co-producing acclaimed series like “The Young Pope” and “The New Pope” with Sky and HBO, among others. Her efforts were recognized when she was named Variety’s International Media Woman of the Year in March 2024, highlighting the studio’s global influence in content production and distribution.
Despite Fernández Espeso’s departure, Grup Mediapro faces new challenges, particularly the loss of a key contract for soccer game production and transmission with La Liga. The company’s majority ownership by Southwind Group, which includes China’s Hontai Capital, adds another dimension to its strategic direction. Sergio Oslé, former president of Movistar Plus+, has been appointed as the new president of Grup Mediapro, bringing his experience in modernizing soccer broadcasts in Spain.
As Fernández Espeso moves on to her next endeavor, her passion for international content creation remains evident. While her future plans are unknown, it is likely that she will continue to make a significant impact in the global entertainment industry. Grup Mediapro will undoubtedly continue to evolve under new leadership, building on the foundation laid by Fernández Espeso during her tenure.
