Nnamdi Emelifeonwu and Feargus MacDaeid Revolutionize Legal Tech with Definely

Nnamdi Emelifeonwu, a lawyer at Freshfields, was always intrigued by the challenges faced by his colleague Feargus MacDaeid, one of the few registered blind lawyers in the U.K. The duo realized the need for a solution to help navigate complex contracts, leading to the birth of Definely, an AI legal tech startup.

Recently, Definely secured a $30 million Series B funding round from European and North American investors, marking a significant milestone for the U.K.-based company. This follows a successful $7 million Series A funding last year.

Key Features of Definely

Definely offers a comprehensive productivity suite designed to streamline the legal drafting and review process. The platform includes:

  • Draft: Allows lawyers to read contracts, navigate definitions, and clauses seamlessly.
  • Vault: Enables users to insert clauses with a single click for efficiency.
  • Proof: Utilizes AI to check for inconsistencies and broken cross-references in legal documents.
  • PDF: Allows users to extract and analyze information from scanned documents.

Moreover, Definely recently introduced a cutting-edge AI system called Enhance, featuring AI agents that collaborate within Microsoft Word to enhance drafting, reviewing, and proofreading processes.

Future Expansion and Growth

With the latest funding, Definely plans to expand its presence in the U.S., where it currently generates 30% of its revenue. The company also aims to invest further in AI technology and increase its workforce to support its growth trajectory.

Notable players in the legal contract space, such as Luminance, Robin AI, and ContractPodAi, are also innovating to improve legal operations.

Empowering Black Entrepreneurship

As a Nigerian immigrant in the U.K., Emelifeonwu’s entrepreneurial journey reflects his passion for creating solutions to real-world challenges. He emphasizes the significance of Black founders in the venture capital landscape and hopes to inspire others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

By combining innovation, technology, and a mission-driven approach, Definely is reshaping the legal tech industry and paving the way for a more efficient and inclusive legal landscape.
