Letters to the Editor: Luxon, Waitangi and climate change

Today’s Letters to the Editor cover a range of topics, including Luxon’s absence at Waitangi, the importance of understanding history, and the debate on climate engineering as a solution.

PM’s Absence at Waitangi Raises Concerns

Waitangi Day is a significant event for commemorating Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and this year’s celebrations are expected to draw a large crowd. However, the absence of Christopher Luxon at this event, especially in light of recent political developments, has raised questions about leadership and commitment to addressing important issues.

It is disappointing to see a lack of engagement from key figures in moments of heightened tension and significance, such as those surrounding Māori rights and the Treaty Principles Bill.

Understanding History and Treaties

History is a crucial aspect of understanding our present and shaping our future. The literacy levels and written language of Māori leaders at the time of Te Tiriti o Waitangi show the importance of education and communication in building relationships and agreements.

It is essential to acknowledge the complexities and nuances of historical treaties and to approach them with honesty and respect in order to heal past wounds and move forward as a nation.

Looking Forward, Not Backward

The statement “We walk backwards through life with our eyes fixed firmly on the past” reflects a narrow view of progress and aspiration. It is essential to focus on the future and strive towards building a peaceful and prosperous society for all.

Those who dwell on the past risk missing out on opportunities for growth and development. It is time to shift our gaze towards the future and embrace change for the betterment of our nation.

Climate Change and the Urgency for Action

The challenge of climate change requires urgent and decisive action. While climate engineering may be considered as a potential solution, it is crucial to approach it with caution and consideration for its long-term impacts.

As we navigate the complexities of climate change, it is important to prioritize sustainable practices and collective action to mitigate its effects and secure a better future for all.
