The Train Masters of Babylon, a Long Island model train club, has dedicated over a year to crafting a remarkable 6,500-square-foot display. This display, located in the Upper Room Church of Dix Hills, features a variety of model trains buzzing past iconic landmarks such as New York City skyscrapers, New Jersey Turnpike oil refineries, and the Horseshoe Curve of Pennsylvania.
The passion project, which cost around $100,000, will be showcased to the public for free this weekend before the club goes back to work on enhancing the display for another year. The TMB has put in countless hours to create a layout that includes main lines, branch lines, and even a special subway system running beneath the display.
The club faced challenges when they had to move to a larger facility, but they overcame them and began constructing their most extensive display yet. Members have spent hours perfecting the layout, electrical engineering, and train operation to ensure a top-notch experience for visitors.
Despite the hard work, the members find joy in their hobby. They incorporate clever elements into the display, such as using a picnic table as a bridge and a tuna can as a water tower. The model even features a train with Lego figures on it, adding a fun touch to the exhibit.
The club also proudly displays a piece of TV and model train history – the actual set piece where Bobby Baccalieri was whacked in “The Sopranos.” This unique addition adds an extra layer of excitement to the exhibit, especially for fans of the show.
