Exploring the Inspiration Behind Libertine’s Fall Collection

During a visit to Sanssouci, the summer palace of Frederick the Great, designer Johnson Hartig not only checked off a bucket list item but also discovered a wealth of inspiration for his upcoming fall collection. The essence of Sanssouci, meaning “without care,” resonated with Hartig as he delved into the history and grandeur of the palace.

Hartig’s interpretation of the sun symbols adorning the pavilions in Potsdam found their way onto the back of a jacket, while nods to Frederick the Great’s fascination with astronomy were reflected in elements of sky and space throughout the collection. However, Hartig didn’t limit himself to just these historical references; he infused the collection with a touch of Americana.

American influences were evident in embellished jeans, a vibrant crazy quilt pattern on textured fabric with hints of gold sparkle, and a nostalgic gold “tweed” reminiscent of his mother’s chic ’60s style. Despite drawing from diverse sources, Hartig managed to create a cohesive and visually striking collection.

Embracing Elegance and Restraint

For fall, Hartig favored a tunic-over-pants silhouette, aiming for a more restrained and elegant aesthetic. The collection exuded a sense of slimness and sophistication, with standout pieces like a black crepe dress adorned with intricate beadwork reminiscent of iconic looks from the past.

Coats in reissued animal prints, shiny reptile textures, and plaid patterns embellished with rhinestone roses were designed to be cinched at the waist, adding a touch of structure to the fluid silhouettes. Hartig’s attention to detail and craftsmanship shone through in every piece, showcasing his commitment to creating wearable art.

Creating Joy Through Fashion

In a world filled with uncertainty, Hartig believes in the transformative power of fashion to bring joy and escapism. The designer’s playful use of pendant embroidery, beading, and tinsel embellishments reflects his own sense of delight in creating whimsical and exuberant designs.

After 25 years in the industry, Hartig continues to evoke a sense of joy and freedom through his brand, Libertine. Like Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci palace, Libertine serves as a sanctuary of creativity and expression, offering a respite from the complexities of modern life.

From historical inspirations to modern American influences, Libertine’s fall collection is a testament to Hartig’s artistic vision and ability to create fashion that transcends trends and embraces individuality.
