Lightspeed L.A., a prominent video game company, has recently made headlines by signing a groundbreaking agreement with SAG-AFTRA, the labor union representing performers in the entertainment industry. This deal, known as the interim Interactive Media Agreement, allows Lightspeed L.A. to continue its production with union performers amidst an ongoing strike against other major video game publishers.

The agreement covers both current and future games developed by Lightspeed L.A., with their upcoming title “Last Sentinel” being the first project to move forward under this new agreement. SAG-AFTRA initiated the strike against industry giants such as Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and Warner Bros. Games, citing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence to create digital replicas of performers without proper compensation and protections.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator of SAG-AFTRA, expressed his delight in partnering with Lightspeed L.A. and commended the company for their commitment to equitable terms for performers. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair and sustainable future for all individuals working in the entertainment industry.

The strike, which was called by SAG-AFTRA on July 26, reflects a broader push for better working conditions and compensation for performers in the rapidly evolving landscape of video game development. Lightspeed L.A.’s decision to prioritize the well-being and rights of their cast members has been met with praise from both the union and industry insiders.

Steve Martin, the general manager of Lightspeed L.A., highlighted the company’s unwavering support for talent and the creative input they bring to video game projects. He expressed gratitude towards SAG-AFTRA for their collaboration in reaching this agreement and reaffirmed Lightspeed L.A.’s commitment to upholding performer protections.

Sarah Elmaleh, chair of the negotiating committee for SAG-AFTRA’s Interactive Media Agreement, underscored the significance of the Lightspeed L.A. deal as a testament to some publishers’ willingness to align with the union’s terms. She emphasized the importance of proper AI protections for actors and praised Lightspeed L.A. for their genuine appreciation of performers as integral contributors to the gaming industry.

In conclusion, the partnership between Lightspeed L.A. and SAG-AFTRA marks a positive step towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for performers in the video game industry. By prioritizing the rights and well-being of their cast members, Lightspeed L.A. sets a positive example for other companies to follow in supporting and valuing the contributions of all individuals involved in game development.
