The race to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology is heating up, with French start-up Mistral making waves with its new series of powerful “open” AI models. The Paris-based company recently unveiled Mistral Large 3, a large language system that is touted as one of the best multimodal and multilingual open-weight models in the world. This new release is seen as a major move by Mistral to gain a competitive edge in the AI development space, especially as Europe is facing increasing pressure to catch up to the US and China in this field.

According to Guillaume Lample, co-founder and chief scientist at Mistral, the decision to make these models open was driven by the company’s mission to democratize AI and make it accessible to everyone. By offering models that can be used in most European languages as well as some Asian languages, Mistral is positioning itself as a key player in the development of AI technology on the continent.

In contrast to US tech giants like OpenAI and Google, who prefer closed models that give them full control over their technology, Mistral’s open approach is seen as a more transparent and collaborative way of advancing AI innovation. This move aligns with the European Commission’s push for greater AI sovereignty, as the bloc seeks to reduce its dependence on foreign technology providers and promote homegrown AI tools.

Mistral’s advocacy for public funding, increased computing power, and access to data for European open-source developers has also garnered attention, with the company lobbying European leaders to support the growth of the AI industry on the continent. By releasing smaller and faster open models that can be used offline, Mistral is catering to a wide range of use cases, including drones, robotics, healthcare, and defense.

Despite the praise for Mistral’s open-weight models, some critics have raised concerns about the lack of comprehensive information provided compared to traditional open-source models. Andreas Liesenfeld, assistant professor at Radboud University and co-founder of the European Open Source AI Index, highlighted the importance of data at scale in fostering AI innovation in Europe.

Overall, Mistral’s bold move to release powerful open AI models has put Europe on the map in the global AI development landscape. By offering accessible and versatile models, Mistral is paving the way for AI developers in Europe to stay competitive and drive innovation in the continent.
