Last week’s Murder of Kevin Patel in Lincoln Park
A tragic incident unfolded last week in Lincoln Park, resulting in the murder of 28-year-old Kevin Patel near his home. Prosecutors have revealed that the crime was a botched robbery attempt with a random victim, leading to the arrest of 25-year-old Josalyn Fowler.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara, surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to Patel’s murder. He was seen walking towards his residence on West Lill carrying a backpack when Fowler and her cousin approached him. Shortly after passing him, Fowler brandished a gun and attempted to steal Patel’s backpack.
During the struggle for the bag, Patel managed to distance himself from Fowler, who then fatally shot him in the chest. Despite the heinous act, Fowler immediately dialed 911, providing false information about the direction in which the killer fled.
Following the murder, Fowler and her cousin were captured on video making their way to the Fullerton Red Line station before fleeing the scene. Facial recognition technology and witness testimonies helped authorities identify Fowler as the prime suspect in the case.
Upon her apprehension, a loaded firearm matching the one used in the shooting was found in Fowler’s possession. She has since been charged with first-degree murder, murder during a forcible felony, and attempted armed robbery.
Justice Mary Marubio ordered Fowler’s detention during a court hearing on Friday, ensuring that she faces the consequences of her actions. The community mourns the loss of Kevin Patel, a promising young actuary whose life was tragically cut short.
