Today’s edition of the “Daily Variety” podcast features Variety senior correspondent Daniel D’Addario as he delves into the psyche of “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” star Charlie Hunnam, who takes on the role of a serial killer in our Cover Story segment.

Hunnam opens up about his professional choices made over the past ten years during his candid interview with D’Addario. He shares insights about his return to a leading role in the latest season of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology series.

In addition, host Cynthia Littleton of “Daily Variety” journeys through the Variety archives to explore a front page from October 1956, filled with headlines that still resonate today. The front page is showcased below.

D’Addario comments on Hunnam’s interview style, noting, “Hunnam was genuinely warm and open to discussing various topics. Initially, we planned to meet at his preferred coffee shop, but he felt uncomfortable sharing his thoughts on acting in front of familiar baristas. Instead, we moved to his office space, where he expressed that he hadn’t had a chance to engage in this kind of dialogue for some time, leading to an enlightening and authentic conversation about his passions.”

The episode also features a blast from the past, showcasing the front page of Daily Variety from October 1, 1956. The headlines from that day reflect themes that are relevant even now. Among the unique Variety stories is a tale from Washington, D.C., covering producer Samuel Goldwyn’s somewhat awkward visit to President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the White House.
