LIV Golf has once again made a move to apply for the Official World Golf Rankings after their previous application was rejected in October 2023. The OWGR had initially denied their application, citing concerns about the team events impacting the individual player scores. However, in a surprising turn of events, the former CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman, withdrew the application in May 2024.
Months later, the OWGR Chairman, Trevor Immelman, revealed in an interview that LIV Golf had not reached out to discuss the ranking points further. But in a recent development, the Saudi League officially resubmitted their application for the ranking last month.
CEO of LIV Golf, Scott O’Neil, expressed confidence in their new application and stated that it addresses the previous concerns raised by the OWGR. He emphasized the importance of working together with the Official World Golf Ranking to ensure that the best players have the opportunity to compete in prestigious events. O’Neil’s statement highlighted their commitment to a more global and accurate ranking system.
The format of LIV Golf events differs from traditional golf leagues, with no cutlines and a shorter 54-hole format compared to the typical 72-hole events seen on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Despite these differences, LIV Golf is seeking recognition and inclusion in the OWGR system to provide players with the opportunity to compete on a global stage.
OWGR Chairman Trevor Immelman confirmed the receipt of LIV Golf’s new application on June 30 and stated that the review process had begun. He reassured that the application would be evaluated thoroughly according to OWGR criteria to ensure fairness and integrity in the ranking system.
In the midst of these developments, LIV Golfers are currently participating in the Valderrama event, with players like Talor Gooch, Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, and Branden Grace leading after the first round.
