The worry is the lack of depth in the squad. When the clock hit 75 minutes and the first sub was made, it was not a like-for-like switch. Instead of a Henderson or a Wharton, who might offer more protection, the only change was to bring on Mac Allister for Gakpo, leaving Kerkez and Frimpong to run themselves ragged for another quarter of an hour. Even when it became clear that a shootout was inevitable, the only change to the front four was Wirtz making way for Salah. When the Egyptian missed his penalty, Jurgen Klopp turned away in frustration.

The shootout was a tale of two goalkeepers, Henderson guessing right to deny Mac Allister and Kerkez before watching Edouard Mendy make the difference. As he raced out to smother Salah’s tame effort, the Palace end erupted. The first trophy of the season was theirs and Liverpool will have to ponder how far they can go without the sort of defensive structure that took them to the title in 2022.

Just remember, it was a defeat in the Community Shield that set the stage for a Liverpool side to win far greater prizes than they did last season. For all the questions raised at Wembley, it’s a safe bet that Klopp and his players will have answers when the real action begins.

As the preseason games come to a close, teams are beginning to show their strengths and weaknesses on the field. The champions may have gaps in their gameplay that are being exposed, causing other teams in the league to see them as vulnerable. However, it is important to remember that these games are just a warm-up for the real competition that lies ahead.

The champions may not be playing at their full potential during the preseason, as they are likely experimenting with different strategies and lineups. This could explain why they are showing some weaknesses that other teams are eager to exploit. However, once the regular season begins, the champions will likely have ironed out these issues and be back to their dominant ways.

It is common for teams to have ups and downs during the preseason, as they are still figuring out their strengths and weaknesses. The important thing is for the champions to learn from these mistakes and use them as motivation to improve before the regular season starts.

As other teams in the league see the champions struggle during the preseason, they may see an opportunity to dethrone them and become the new top team. However, it is important for these teams to not underestimate the champions, as they have a history of rising to the occasion when it matters most.

In the end, the preseason games are just a preview of what is to come in the regular season. The champions may have some gaps in their gameplay now, but they will likely address these issues before the games that really count. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the league responds to the champions’ vulnerabilities and if they can capitalize on them when it matters most.
