A recent incident in New York has shaken the community, as Luigi Mangione was captured on surveillance video in a hotel lobby walking past the health care CEO he would later fatally shoot. The victim, Brian Thompson, was targeted as he left a Manhattan hotel on the morning of Dec. 4, 2024. The pretrial hearing for Mangione’s state murder trial has been ongoing, with testimony from lead investigator Lt. David Leonardi shedding light on the events leading up to the tragic shooting.

According to Leonardi, Mangione, 27, allegedly shot Thompson in the back and leg before fleeing to Pennsylvania. Surveillance footage from the Hilton Hotel where Thompson was staying showed Mangione passing by the victim in the lobby a day before the incident. The Justice Department previously released a statement indicating that Mangione had been in New York a week prior to the shooting, conducting surveillance around the victim’s hotel and conference venue.

Following the shooting, officers discovered a gray backpack in Central Park believed to belong to Mangione. Inside the backpack, they found various items, including candy bars, candy, and even Monopoly money. Mangione was later apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where police found incriminating evidence in his possession.

Mangione’s defense team has raised concerns about the legality of the search and whether their client was properly informed of his Miranda rights. Judge Gregory Carro will make a decision on the admissibility of the evidence in the upcoming trial, which includes a federal murder charge in addition to the state murder charge. Mangione has maintained his plea of not guilty to all charges.

The ongoing legal proceedings surrounding this case continue to unfold, with the community eagerly awaiting justice for the victim and accountability for the accused.
