The defense attorney for Luigi Mangione in Pennsylvania is arguing that the police unlawfully detained the murder suspect and searched his belongings at a McDonald’s following a tip.

Mangione, 26, is facing charges of first-degree murder, stalking, and other state and federal charges in New York and Pennsylvania for allegedly shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024.

The attorney for Mangione disputes the use of the term “manifesto” to describe his writings found in his backpack, stating that it is incorrect and prejudicial.

Authorities believe Mangione shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel to send a message to the healthcare insurance industry based on writings found on him during his arrest.

Mangione expressed his grievances with the healthcare industry in his writings, specifically targeting UnitedHealthcare and the shareholder conference attended by Thompson.

The defense attorney is requesting the court not to label Mangione’s writings as a “manifesto” and to suppress other evidence collected during the arrest.

Mangione’s attorney argues that his client was improperly detained and arrested at McDonald’s, leading to the collection of evidence that should not be used against him.

Despite being seen as an anti-capitalist crusader by some supporters, Mangione was arrested after stopping at a Starbucks and later dining at McDonald’s.

Mangione is accused of meticulously planning the murder to ignite a public discussion about the healthcare industry, according to the US Department of Justice.

Prosecutors allege that Mangione planned to travel to New York, find Thompson, and kill him at the shareholder conference.

After the murder, Mangione fled the scene, took a bus to Altoona, where he was arrested.

Originally from Maryland, Mangione graduated from the Gilman School in Baltimore and later received his degrees in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania.
