Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has defended his leadership, highlighting his role in rebuilding the National Party following a period of internal conflict.

Rumors of a potential leadership challenge had circulated in Parliament recently, with senior Cabinet ministers denying any coup plans.

Concerns over lower party votes in upcoming elections had caused dissatisfaction within the National caucus.

In an interview with RNZ, Luxon affirmed his commitment to leading National into the 2026 election campaign.

Reflecting on his political journey, Luxon acknowledged the challenges of rebuilding a party in turmoil and emphasized the need for a disciplined team.

Economic Outlook

Luxon predicted a year of economic growth in 2025, despite challenges such as inflation and external tariffs impacting progress.

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by the public due to slow economic recovery and emphasized his focus on addressing unemployment and fostering long-term solutions.

Luxon highlighted the importance of reducing inflation and interest rates, promoting economic growth, and creating job opportunities.

Coalition Collaboration

Luxon commended the collaborative efforts of the three-party coalition government, emphasizing the importance of allowing parties to differentiate while maintaining alignment on key issues.

He addressed recent disagreements within the coalition regarding legislation, stressing the need to give new laws a chance before considering changes.

Law and Order Policies

Luxon defended the government’s tough stance on law and order, including stricter sentencing laws and initiatives targeting gangs.

He justified the increase in prison population as a necessary investment in public safety and crime prevention.

Luxon expressed no regrets over the government’s crackdown on crime, citing the reduction in incidents like ram raids as evidence of the effectiveness of their policies.

Luxon’s Focus on Public Safety

Luxon emphasized the importance of keeping harmful individuals out of the community, stating that they cause harm and suffering to New Zealanders. He expressed a strong commitment to addressing this issue, making it a focal point of their efforts.

He also mentioned his desire to see a decrease in the prison population, with the condition that it should only happen as a result of reduced crime rates. Luxon highlighted the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and not inflict pain on others in a society founded on rights and responsibilities.

Election Campaign Priorities

Looking ahead to the upcoming election, Luxon outlined his primary focus on the economy, with a keen eye on addressing structural challenges in welfare, health, and superannuation. He emphasized the importance of ensuring economic growth and prosperity for individuals, aiming to boost savings and investments in the country.

While refraining from explicitly stating his preferred coalition partners for the election, Luxon highlighted National’s ability to collaborate with different parties in the past. He stressed the importance of party-voting for National to ensure a strong and stable government in the future.
