Starting in 1965, countless American heroes embarked on a mission to the jungles of Vietnam to counter the spread of communism and champion the cause of freedom against oppressive forces. By March 29, 1973, after eight grueling years, the last U.S. military personnel withdrew, and our final prisoners of war were released, securing their legacy as defenders of liberty. On this National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we pay solemn tribute to these brave individuals for their immense courage, unwavering resilience, and strong bonds of brotherhood during one of the most harrowing conflicts in American history.

Throughout nearly a decade, these soldiers faced extreme heat, relentless monsoon rains, challenging terrains, and the harsh reality of guerilla warfare. After eight years, the toll was devastating: 58,000 American service members lost their lives, and over 300,000 were wounded, marking the Vietnam War as one of the deadliest military engagements in our history.

Despite their valiant service in such severe conditions, many Vietnam veterans returned home without the recognition and gratitude they deserved. Today, we commit to ensuring that their service—and that of all veterans—remains honored and never forgotten. As President, I am dedicated to guaranteeing that our veterans receive the respect and support they are owed. During my first term, I proudly enacted the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, establishing March 29 each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day—a lasting tribute to those who fought in Vietnam.

Since resuming office last year, I have focused on empowering and uplifting our veterans. My Administration has achieved historic tax relief for senior citizens, including many of our oldest veterans. We are broadening access to care by opening more than 30 new veteran health clinics nationwide. We are also building the National Center for Warrior Independence, set to accommodate up to 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028. Under my leadership, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has reduced the backlog of veterans awaiting benefits by over 60 percent since last year. The VA is processing a record number of disability claims. Additionally, the VA recently launched the Claim Assist Portal, simplifying the process for veterans to respond to claim requests, and the VA, along with the Department of Justice, has signed an agreement to ensure our most vulnerable veterans receive necessary care.

Today, we come together in gratitude for the selfless service and patriotism shown by those who fought in the Vietnam War. As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, we renew our nation’s solemn promise to always support and honor every hero who has defended our freedom, our home, and our way of life. My loyalty and support for you will never waver.
