In a rather awkward turn of events, French President Emmanuel Macron found himself at the center of a social media storm during a train journey into Ukraine on Sunday.
Accompanied by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Macron was en route from Poland to Kyiv to engage in discussions about the ongoing conflict with Russia and the potential for peace negotiations. However, the atmosphere quickly shifted as rumors began swirling online regarding a supposed drug-related incident involving Macron.
Footage captured by journalists showed Macron hastily grabbing a crumpled tissue, which led to rampant speculation that he was concealing cocaine. Observers even suggested that Merz appeared to be attempting to hide a spoon or straw, as if they were engaged in some covert operation rather than high-level diplomacy.

In response to the escalating chatter, Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova wasted no time in dismissing the official explanations surrounding the incident. She expressed skepticism regarding the “tissue and coffee cup” narrative put forth, suggesting a more nefarious implication.
French media swiftly countered these allegations, asserting that Macron merely picked up a handkerchief from the table, and dismissed the claims as unfounded conspiracy theories.
“There is nothing suspicious in the video,” stated the French outlet Libération, emphasizing the absurdity of the allegations.
Later that day, Macron’s Elysee Palace issued a forceful statement condemning the disinformation. They remarked, “When European unity is perceived as a threat, disinformation will go so far as to make a simple handkerchief look like a drug.” This rhetoric highlights the precarious balance of power and perception in international politics.
Quand l’unité européenne dérange, la désinformation va jusqu’à faire passer un simple mouchoir pour de la drogue.
