Divided Republicans Tackle Iran Policy: A Delicate Balancing Act

As the Republican Party finds itself embroiled in a fierce debate over direct military engagement with Iran, prominent conservative voices have emerged, vociferously opposing intervention—yet curiously directing their ire at nearly everyone except President Donald Trump.

Within the party, factions are vying for Trump’s allegiance, with isolationists urging him to adhere to his campaign promises of steering clear of another major Middle Eastern conflict. Conversely, interventionists, such as Senator Lindsey Graham, are pushing for a more aggressive stance against Iran—an approach that seems to be gaining traction with Trump.

Despite vocal opposition to military action against Iran, many Republicans have refrained from openly criticizing the president’s strategies. Instead, they’ve chosen to critique figures like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Graham for their involvement in the escalating situation.

Conservative social media influencer Laura Loomer called for her followers to document conservative figures who dare to speak out against Trump, stating, “Take screenshots of every single right winger who is shit talking Trump right now. I have most of them. But I don’t want to miss any.” Loomer condemned “grifters” for betraying Trump over the issue of potential military intervention in Iran.

Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon voiced his concerns regarding U.S. military involvement in Iran, cautioning at a recent Christian Science Monitor event, “We can’t have another Iraq.” He also criticized Netanyahu for relying on the U.S. to bail out Israel after its recent offensive against Iran.

Nevertheless, Trump’s supporters have continued to rally around his approach. “President Trump is a President of peace, not of war,” asserted Freedom Caucus member Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). “I trust him and his Cabinet to put America First, and I’m with him all the way.”

This internal divide has prompted Vice President JD Vance, a veteran known for his isolationist stance, to weigh in. In a lengthy post on X, he acknowledged the apprehension surrounding prolonged military engagement but staunchly defended Trump’s decisions regarding Iran. “Of course, people are right to be worried about foreign entanglement after the last 25 years of idiotic foreign policy,” Vance noted. “But I believe the president has earned some trust on this issue.”

Trump appears to be walking a tightrope between the two camps. While initially hesitant to endorse Israel’s military actions against Iran, he has now suggested that the U.S. might provide assistance, potentially employing American “bunker buster” bombs to target Iran’s Fordow enrichment facility—something the Israeli military lacks the capability to destroy alone.

The administration has maintained its steadfast position despite the party’s internal criticism. “President Trump has never wavered in his stance that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon and has communicated this promise to the American people since his victorious campaign. Americans trust President Trump to make the right decisions to keep them safe,” stated White House spokesperson Anna Kelly.

In a rare move, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson openly criticized Trump last week, accusing him of being “complicit in the act of war” following Israel’s missile strikes on Iran. Carlson’s ongoing critiques have put him at odds with more hawkish GOP figures, even leading to a heated exchange with Senator Ted Cruz, whom Carlson accused of misunderstanding the complexities of Iranian society.

These remarks have not gone unnoticed by Trump, who labeled Carlson “kooky” on Truth Social after Carlson’s criticisms. However, Trump later suggested that tensions had eased, telling reporters, “Tucker is a nice guy. He called and apologized the other day, because he thought he said things that were a little bit too strong, and I appreciated that.”

Even staunch Trump supporter Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene came close to criticizing the president, expressing support for Carlson. She stated, “He unapologetically believes the same things I do. Foreign wars/intervention/regime change put America last, kill innocent people, are making us broke, and will ultimately lead to our destruction. That’s not kooky. That’s what millions of Americans voted for.” In a separate post, Greene took aim at “neocon warmongers” seeking proxy wars in Ukraine and beyond.

Despite the uproar from within MAGA circles, some Republican leaders appear unfazed. Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked, “We have people as you know in our party who have different views about America’s role in the world. But I think the president is well within his authority, understands what’s at stake in ensuring Iran never has a nuclear weapon, and will do everything he can to protect America and American interests.”

Jordain Carney and Jake Traylor contributed to this report.
