Magda Butrym Celebrates Ten Years in Fashion with Stunning PFW Presentation
A couple of years ago, Magda Butrym celebrated her 10th anniversary in the fashion industry with a campaign titled “Decade of the Rose,” featuring the stunning supermodel Malgosia Bela. Fast forward to present day, and Bela was back on the runway to open Butrym’s show at Paris Fashion Week, marking the most elaborate presentation the designer has ever staged.
For this collection, titled “Zima” (the Polish word for winter), Butrym revealed that she had a significant shift in her creative process. Inspired by the Polish New Wave and specifically the 1969 film “Polowanie na muchy” (“Hunting Flies”) by director Andrzej Wajda, she found a new wave of inspiration that was as impactful as its French counterparts. The film’s portrayal of the central character, Irena, as a controlling, mantis-like figure resonated with Butrym, who reimagined Irena as a heroine who confidently claims her femininity rather than performing it.
In a fashion week dominated by bold statements of power dressing, Butrym took a more subtle approach to reclaiming space for women. She incorporated strategic padding and volume, extending skirt lengths to midi and ankle lengths to cater to a diverse range of body types. Knitwear played a significant role in the collection, offering everyday staples with a touch of Slavic details like hand crochet and kerchiefs.
Butrym’s standout looks focused on texture, with tailored leather coats cinched at the waist, glossy shearling numbers, and feather-like fabric fringe and bead embellishments on dresses. Blazers were a key element, with double-breasted styles paired with fluid trousers for a sophisticated silhouette. A cropped jacket in shaved faux fur made a powerful statement without overwhelming personal space, accessorized with a new bag named Barbara after the designer’s friend.
As this collection prepares to launch in the new Magda Butrym store on Mercer Street, it is clear that Butrym’s unique blend of texture, volume, and Slavic details will be a hit among fashion-forward individuals. With a nod to Polish cinema and a fresh perspective on femininity, Butrym’s latest collection is sure to make a lasting impact in the fashion world.
