Violent crime rates in the United States have shown a decline nationwide in 2025, according to a recent survey. However, despite this positive trend, several cities have reported increases in various categories of violent crimes such as homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) conducted a survey comparing violent crime reporting between January and September 2025 with the same period in 2024. The survey highlighted a decrease in total violent crime nationwide in all four key categories:

– Homicide: 4,143 cases in 2025 compared to 5,126 in 2024
– Rape: 20,407 cases in 2025 compared to 21,728 in 2024
– Robbery: 66,501 cases in 2025 compared to 81,860 in 2024
– Aggravated assault: 194,804 cases in 2025 compared to 216,466 in 2024

It is important to note that these numbers are preliminary and based on voluntary reporting by participating law enforcement agencies.

Despite the overall decrease in violent crime nationwide, some cities have experienced an uptick in these crimes. Cities such as Omaha, Nebraska, reported increases in all four categories of violent crimes. Atlanta, Georgia, saw rises in rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Columbus, Ohio, reported increases in robbery and aggravated assault. Los Angeles County, California, experienced increases in rape and aggravated assault. Tampa, Florida, recorded increases in rape and robbery. Suffolk County, New York, reported increases in homicide and robbery. Wichita, Kansas, saw increases in homicide and rape. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, reported increases in rape and aggravated assault. Denver, Colorado, recorded an increase in rape. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, also saw a rise in rape.

Despite these increases in certain cities, the overall trend of violent crime is on a downward trajectory in major US cities. President Donald Trump’s administration has been focusing on combating violent crime by launching crime operations in various cities, including Washington, DC, where the National Guard was deployed to assist local police earlier this year.

As efforts continue to address and reduce violent crime rates in cities across the country, it is essential for law enforcement agencies and communities to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
