Winter Storm Watch in Northern California for Presidents Day Weekend

As people prepare to travel for the holiday weekend, Northern California is on high alert due to an impending winter storm. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for several feet of snow in the region, particularly in the Sierra Nevada and its surrounding areas.

Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution and expect major travel disruptions as the storm approaches. The best window for safe travel is expected to be Saturday through Sunday morning, according to Dakari Anderson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

While conditions were relatively calm on Saturday, snowfall is anticipated to intensify on Sunday afternoon. Communities at higher elevations, ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 feet, could see up to 2 feet of snow accumulation.

The forecast predicts even heavier snowfall in more remote areas, with some communities potentially receiving 6 to 8 feet of snow. Blue Canyon, a small community west of Lake Tahoe, is among those expected to be heavily impacted.

Residents in South Lake Tahoe have been warned about possible road closures and whiteout conditions on Monday. Similarly, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has advised residents to prepare for the storm and anticipate delays.

The winter storm is projected to last several days and may extend its impact to parts of western Nevada and southern Oregon. It is a reminder that winter is not over yet, despite the spring-like weather experienced earlier in the year.
