Jake Knapp has finally shared his feelings following the tragic passing of his girlfriend, Makena White, who died at the young age of 28.
In a poignant statement released to People on September 28, the professional golfer described her loss as a “hard reality to grasp” while honoring the memory of White.
“Makena was a truly remarkable soul whose generosity to others is something I will forever cherish,” stated Knapp, who is 31. “We created countless unforgettable moments together, and now without her, it’s difficult to come to terms with this new reality.”
He added, “Her amazing family and wonderful friends will miss her playful spirit immensely. It’s an understatement to acknowledge how challenging this is for everyone who loved Mak, particularly her family and friends, who merit privacy and respect during this heart-wrenching time.”
The announcement of White’s passing came earlier that same day, shared through a heartfelt post on her Instagram by a friend.
“Hello everyone, this is Makena’s friend, and I write with a heavy heart to inform you that Makena passed away earlier this week,” the post stated. “Her absence is deeply felt by her father, her family, her friends, and, of course, her beloved dogs, Nelly and Fergie.”
It continued, “Makena was truly one in a million. She had a rare gift for making everyone feel special, and her boundless love and infectious joy filled our lives. To be loved by Makena was an extraordinary blessing, filled with laughter and a bit of delightful chaos as we tried to keep pace with her adventurous spirit.”
The heartfelt Instagram post concluded with an emotional farewell: “We love you, Mak. You will always be missed, and we’ll search for you in every sunset ❤️.”
Details surrounding the cause of her death have not yet been disclosed, but the family has asked for donations in her memory to be directed to the Bruyère Brain Health & Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endowment Fund.
Knapp and White’s romance began in August 2023, with the couple publicly declaring their relationship in February.
Just last month, White shared a nostalgic tribute on Instagram, celebrating Knapp’s success after a fruitful PGA Tour season.
“Year 2 of our first fairway hugs and watching you pursue your dreams 🏌️♂️,” she wrote alongside a series of pictures documenting their journey together. “So thankful to walk beside you, and here’s to many, many more adventures! I love you so much, sweet boy; being proud of you is effortless ❤️.”
In a touching reply, Knapp expressed his gratitude, writing, “Thank youuu, I love you ❤️.”
Reflecting on their relationship, White had earlier celebrated Knapp’s 30th birthday with a heartfelt message, heralding him as “the kindest, hardest working, and most generous person I’ll ever know. To know you is to love you. Here’s to 30 years of you living the dream—and you’re only beginning. Happy birthday, my sweet boy; you deserve the world.”
