An individual who was reportedly acting irrationally and stabbed a stranger in the back at a Lower Manhattan subway station last week has been apprehended, authorities announced on Wednesday.
Dariel Castillo, 28 years old with a history of four prior arrests, has been charged with assault for allegedly attacking a 51-year-old man at the Broadway-Lafayette station around 5:10 a.m. on January 28, according to police reports.
The altercation apparently began when Castillo initiated a confrontation with the victim on the station steps for reasons that are still unknown. He then escalated the situation by repeatedly stabbing the man in the back with a knife, as per law enforcement officials.
The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he is currently in stable condition.
Castillo, a resident of East Harlem, was remanded into custody with a bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond following his arraignment on Thursday morning, according to online court records.
It was revealed that Castillo’s previous arrests included charges of petit larceny, evading subway fare, and criminal possession of a weapon, with the most recent being a domestic violence assault in November.
