A resident of the West Side faces charges after allegedly attacking a 94-year-old man with a brick during an attempted robbery while the victim was on his mobility scooter in Garfield Park, according to prosecutors.
Elijah Carter, 30, is charged with attempted robbery affecting a victim over the age of 60 and aggravated battery against an elderly person following an incident on the morning of September 30, occurring in the 3700 block of West Madison Street.
The elderly victim had previously given a neighbor a ride on his scooter to the bus stop and then continued along Madison Street around 8:43 a.m. The neighbor relayed to police that the victim is known for helping others financially, indicating he may have been carrying cash.
Shortly thereafter, authorities report that Carter jumped over a concrete bench, approached the victim, and demanded money. When the victim claimed he had no cash, Carter forcibly removed him from the scooter, knocking him to the ground, and struck him twice in the head with a large rock or brick. Subsequently, he proceeded to kick and hit the victim in the chest while he curled up defensively, as outlined in the detention petition.
The victim’s screams caught the attention of his goddaughter, who was in close proximity. She witnessed Carter hovering over her godfather, striking him with one hand while the other rummaged through his pockets. She noted that Carter was barefoot and in response to her spraying him with mace, he threw his only remaining shoe at her before fleeing the scene.
By the time officers arrived, they found the injured victim being assisted back into his scooter by witnesses. Carter was located nearby without any shoes.
The victim was taken to the hospital where medical professionals discovered he suffered an unstable neck fracture, lung injuries, extensive bruising, swelling, and multiple cuts. He is reportedly scheduled for a neurological surgery, as per prosecutors.
Carter is currently in custody with a detention hearing set for Monday.
