A tragic incident unfolded at a South Side smoke shop as a man was fatally shot during an altercation on a Friday afternoon. The victim, a 42-year-old man, was engaged in an argument with two individuals inside City Smoke located at 7050 South Damen when the situation took a deadly turn. A 38-year-old man drew a gun and proceeded to shoot the victim multiple times in the chest, head, and back, as reported by the Chicago police.
Following the shooting, both suspects fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. However, the gunman was later discovered with a gunshot wound to his left hand in the 7100 block of South Bell in response to a separate “person shot” call. The circumstances surrounding how the suspect sustained the injury remain unclear, but investigators confirmed his involvement in the shooting through surveillance footage.
On the other hand, the second offender managed to evade capture by fleeing west on 71st Street. Descriptions provided by an officer who viewed the store’s surveillance video indicated that the suspect had braided hair and was dressed in an olive green or camouflage hoodie with blue jeans.
The ongoing investigation seeks to apprehend the remaining suspect who is still at large. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the meticulous review of evidence, including surveillance footage, are vital in piecing together the events leading up to the fatal shooting at City Smoke.
