A shocking incident in Chicago has resulted in a young man being sentenced to four years in prison for shooting his teenage brother. Owen Brown, 20, made headlines when he allegedly shot his 16-year-old brother in the chest while the younger boy was sleeping in their family home on West Walton Street on May 31, 2023.

According to prosecutors, Brown woke his brother up in the middle of the night and uttered the chilling words, “I’m tired of you,” before firing his weapon. After shooting his brother in the chest and arm, Brown reportedly told him not to tell anyone about the incident. However, the brave young boy managed to alert his mother, who promptly called 911. When the police arrived at the scene, Brown was found covering his brother’s wounds with a blanket.

This disturbing incident unfolded against the backdrop of a pending felony gun case against Brown in juvenile court. The details of this previous case remain confidential due to juvenile record laws. Despite facing three counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, Brown managed to strike a plea deal that allowed him to plead guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon instead.

Judge James Novy presided over the case and ultimately handed down a four-year sentence to Brown. This outcome was a stark contrast to the potential sentence of at least six years in prison, along with a possible enhancement of up to 25 years for personally discharging the gun.

The gravity of this incident underscores the importance of addressing underlying issues such as gun violence and family conflict. It serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from unresolved disputes and access to firearms. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, it is crucial to prioritize prevention and intervention efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.
