Man Charged in Uptown Shootout Incident
Authorities have filed charges against Jabri Sims, 26, for his involvement in a shootout on a bustling Uptown street in September. Surveillance footage captured Sims firing a rifle during the altercation, where he also sustained a gunshot wound.
The incident took place in the 4900 block of North Kenmore, prompting a police response following reports of gunfire at approximately 12:55 p.m. Sims later sought medical treatment for his injuries at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Initially, misinformation suggested that Sims had been shot in Streeterville, coincidentally near the location where a high-profile incident involving Jussie Smollett had occurred.
Investigators identified Sims from the video footage, with two officers recognizing him. Additionally, a music video featuring Sims brandishing a firearm in attire resembling that of the shooter further linked him to the incident. As a result, Sims faces charges for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon with a previous conviction.
During a court appearance, Judge Ankur Srivastava ordered Sims to be detained pending trial, citing his prior felony convictions, including a gun-related offense. The judge highlighted Sims’ role in a daytime shootout as a significant public safety concern.
Sims’ previous firearm conviction stemmed from a 2017 raid on an Uptown residence by CPD and federal authorities. During the operation, Sims was found in possession of narcotics and a stolen revolver, leading to a guilty plea and a three-year sentence.
