A Chicago man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a carjacking incident that occurred in Logan Square in 2021, which resulted in a woman being shot. The case, which remained unsolved for approximately 18 months, was cracked when DNA evidence from the victim’s vehicle door was traced back to him, according to prosecutors.
Daryl McKinley, aged 22, entered a guilty plea for armed robbery, leading to this sentence handed down by Judge James Obbish. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped four additional felony charges, including aggravated battery with a firearm, stemming from the actions of an accomplice who shot the victim. With good behavior taken into account, McKinley is expected to serve around six years.
The carjacking occurred at around 9:45 p.m. on December 8, 2021, outside the Dill Pickle Food Co-op located at 2746 North Milwaukee Avenue. As stated by prosecutors, the victim, a 22-year-old woman, had just finished her shopping and was attempting to enter her car when an SUV cut her off. Two men exited the SUV, with McKinley reportedly opening the passenger door while the second assailant shot her in the left arm and demanded her valuables.

According to prosecutors, McKinley took the woman’s groceries and backpack before both suspects escaped in her SUV. Although surveillance footage captured the event, law enforcement was unable to identify the vehicle’s license plate or the suspects.
However, when police recovered the woman’s vehicle, a technician with the Chicago police took a DNA sample from the passenger door. After a lengthy wait of around 18 months, the results identified McKinley’s DNA as a match.
CWBChicago was established in 2013 by five residents from the Wrigleyville and Boystown neighborhoods who were frustrated with the inaccurate information being shared at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.
Since then, we have broadened our coverage to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and various North Side neighborhoods. Yet, our commitment to delivering original public safety reporting with enhanced context and detail compared to mainstream media remains steadfast.
