An incident of road rage on the Kennedy Expressway last week has led to felony charges against an Avondale man. Rene Garcia, 52, allegedly fired a gun at another vehicle during the altercation, injuring a 14-year-old boy who was a passenger in the car.

According to Illinois State Police, the confrontation took place around 3:14 p.m. on February 18 near Ogden Avenue. Prosecutors stated that someone in an orange Hyundai Santa Fe threw a cup at Garcia’s vehicle, prompting him to pull out a gun and shoot at the other car.

The teenager in the Santa Fe was hit by the gunfire and was taken to the hospital by the other driver. Fortunately, the injuries were described as non-life-threatening by ISP.

Forensic testing confirmed that Garcia was the sole individual who discharged a firearm during the incident. As a result, he is facing charges of aggravated battery by discharging a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle. Judge James Costello has granted the state’s detention petition in this case.
