A man from Humboldt Park has been taken into custody following an incident in which he allegedly shot his 18-year-old daughter and fired at her girlfriend out of anger over their same-sex relationship. Law enforcement eventually located him near Orlando, Florida.

Prosecutors detailed that on the evening of August 24, the two women stopped their SUV in the 2600 block of West Crystal after realizing they had both passenger-side tires slashed. While waiting for friends to assist them, 59-year-old Jaime Santiago parked nearby and approached them.

Santiago reportedly confronted his daughter regarding her relationship with her 19-year-old companion. During the heated argument, he opened a fanny pack he was wearing, drew a revolver, and aimed it at the girlfriend. When his daughter intervened, he shot her in the abdomen and subsequently fired several more rounds at her fleeing partner, as stated by prosecutors in detention documents.

Surveillance footage purportedly captures Santiago pursuing the fleeing girlfriend and discharging his weapon again. Both women who were shot, along with several witnesses, later identified Santiago during photo lineups.

Following the shooting, Santiago left Chicago but was located and arrested in Kissimmee, Florida.

He faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and committing a hate crime. Cook County Judge Deidre Dyer has ordered his detention, labeling him a danger to the LGBTQ community.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by a group of five locals from Wrigleyville and Boystown who grew disillusioned with the misleading information shared in local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Our coverage area has since expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and additional neighborhoods on the North Side. However, our mission remains the same: to deliver original public safety news with enhanced context and depth compared to traditional media sources.
