Chicago police are currently investigating a tragic incident that took place late Friday afternoon behind a residence in the 600 block of West Division Street on the Near North Side. The incident involved a fatal shooting that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man.

The authorities were alerted to the scene around 4:31 p.m. following a 911 call reporting a shooting during a possible robbery. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to his chest inside the residence. Despite being rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, the man unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. At this time, no arrests have been made, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

This tragic incident marks the 42nd shooting on the Near North Side this year alone. Of particular concern is a mass shooting that occurred on July 2 outside a lounge in the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue, where 18 individuals were targeted in an unsolved case. The escalating violence in the area is alarming, with statistics showing an increase in shootings compared to previous years.

In 2019, there were 31 shootings reported on the Near North Side, followed by 41 in 2020, 59 in 2021, 65 in 2022, 40 in 2023, and 29 in 2024. The current trend highlights the urgent need for enhanced public safety measures and community support to address the root causes of gun violence in the neighborhood.
