A 60-year-old man has been charged with brutally attacking a teenage girl in Little Village, allegedly stabbing her over a dozen times after she reportedly ignored his greeting of “Good morning.” Authorities have identified the suspect as Miguel Carrera.
The incident occurred on September 11 at approximately 8:39 a.m., within the 2700 block of West Cermak Road, as the young girl made her way to the gym.
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the attack began when Carrera allegedly punched the girl in the face, shattering her glasses, before forcing her to the ground. It was then that prosecutors claim he reached for a pocketknife and stabbed her around 15 times, inflicting injuries to her head, arms, and hands as she attempted to defend herself. Specifically, she sustained stab wounds to her forehead, the back of her head, her left hand, and her right forearm.
Fortunately, eyewitnesses sprang into action, pulling Carrera off the victim and dialing 911. A nearby passerby rushed the girl to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where medical professionals treated her injuries, using stitches and staples. Authorities reported that the violent encounter was captured on surveillance video and confirmed that Carrera and the girl had never interacted prior to this incident.
After the assault, Carrera fled the scene but was apprehended by police approximately half a mile away.
During a court hearing, Judge Antara Rivera ordered that Carrera be detained. He faces two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. The judge noted that Carrera’s admission of guilt during proceedings further justified the decision to keep him incarcerated.
