A 60-year-old man who managed to escape from a federal prison camp in Englewood and evade capture for five years has been handed a 10-year prison sentence and ordered to pay $9 million in restitution, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Allen Todd May entered a guilty plea to charges of wire fraud, escape, and identity theft after being apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in August 2023 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

May, who worked as a facilities clerk at the prison camp and was responsible for driving vehicles on the premises, devised a plan to steal unclaimed oil and gas royalties. Between 2016 and December 2018, he embezzled over $700,000 in royalties before fleeing the Englewood compound.

Over the following five years, May amassed $8 million through the same fraudulent scheme, using the funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle. In addition, he assumed the identities of inmates serving lengthy prison sentences to perpetuate his deception, as highlighted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

May’s latest prison term will commence once he completes the remaining seven years of his sentence from his initial escape.
