Pastor Carl McKay of St. Luke Independent Church in Auburn, Ala., has a special connection with the Broome family from Plant City, Fla. He has known them for years, even back to when John and Julie Broome were just teenagers. McKay fondly remembers seeing them holding hands at a young age and offering them advice, both solicited and unsolicited, throughout the years.
One particular memory McKay shared with his congregation was a story involving a young Johni Broome. During a Sunday school lesson about “David and Goliath,” 9-year-old Johni asked probing questions about the story, showcasing his curiosity and thirst for knowledge. This same determination and resourcefulness that Johni displayed as a child have defined his journey to becoming a standout college basketball player.
Despite facing initial doubts about his athletic abilities and being overlooked by some college programs, Johni Broome has emerged as a star player for the Auburn Tigers. His success on the court is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and strong foundation instilled by his family and faith.
