In September 2024, five individuals were involved in a robbery of a woman on a Red Line train. The Chicago police responded by releasing surveillance images of the suspects, seeking the public’s assistance in identifying them. Among the images, one suspect brazenly stared into the camera, flipping a middle finger. This individual is now facing a 16-year prison sentence.
The suspect, David Mitchell, 19, was on juvenile parole for carjacking and had a history of delinquency. Prosecutors stated that he, along with four others, including two juveniles, robbed a 19-year-old woman on a Red Line train near the 69th Street station on the evening of September 28, 2024.
Police reports indicated that during the robbery, one juvenile brandished a firearm at the victim while Mitchell and others demanded her possessions, seizing her phone, wallet, and backpack. While authorities quickly apprehended the others involved, Mitchell evaded capture. To locate him, investigators distributed CTA surveillance photos to the media, one of which showed Mitchell defiantly biting his lip and extending a middle finger to the camera.
Mitchell was soon identified and arrested. Prosecutors revealed he was found with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun in his jacket pocket, which he claimed to have “found” in a car.
Aside from the CTA train incident, Mitchell faced charges for an armed robbery of a woman on September 11, 2023, in the 7400 block of South Euclid Avenue.
Court documents confirm Mitchell pleaded guilty to all charges. Judge Neera Walsh sentenced him to 16 years for each robbery, three years for the firearm offense, and an additional three years for aggravated battery of a peace officer. All sentences are to run concurrently.
According to Illinois law, Mitchell’s sentence will be reduced by 50% for good behavior, and he has already received credit for 622 days served in Cook County Jail. Consequently, he has approximately 6 years and 4 months remaining to serve. On a lighter note, the abundance of cameras in prison may provide him ample practice for his signature gesture.
